SCOTUS appears likely to uphold TikTok ban as Jan. 19 deadline approaches

The Supreme Court seemed skeptical of popular video-sharing app TikTok's arguments that allowing a ban to go into effect later this month would violate free speech rights, setting the stage for the China-linked app to be taken offline for American users.

During nearly three hours of arguments on Friday, justices seemed inclined to allow the ban on TikTok to go into effect on the Jan. 19 deadline. Most of the justices on the high court seemed to agree that the ban aimed at TikTok's owner, China-based ByteDance, and not the speech taking place on the app.
