Supreme Court justices critical of TikTok's arguments as app faces U.S. ban
The fate of TikTok in the United States is now in the hands of the U.S. Supreme Court. In a pivotal case, justices heard arguments over a law that could force ByteDance, TikTok's Chinese parent company, to sell the platform to a U.S.-owned company or face a nationwide ban starting January 19.
This debate centers on the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act, passed last February with bipartisan support, aimed at addressing concerns over potential data-sharing and algorithmic manipulation by the Chinese government.
TikTok's lawyers argue that the law violates the first amendment rights of its 170 million U.S. users, while the U.S. government emphasizes national security risks.
