Trump talks COVID-19 vaccine distribution, TikTok ban | FULL
U.S. President Donald Trump spoke about the distribution of COVID-19 vaccines, new emergency relief funding for Puerto Rico and the banning of TikTok in the country during a news conference on Friday.
The president said that a “gold standard of trials” was being used to get a vaccine done quickly and that his administration would be announcing one “very soon.” He said that the distribution would be able to start “within 24 hours after notice” that one had passed safety tests with the military being used to get vaccines to Americans. He added that one million doses would be done by end of year with enough for every American by April.
He also said that he believes a deal on the app could “go very quickly" on TikTok. The comments come despite a recent deal previously announced for tech giant Oracle to take over U.S. operations, Trump said Microsoft and Walmart have also been involved in talks and there were great options. He stressed they needed “total security” however from China in finding a deal.
An announcement earlier Friday by Commerce Department Secretary Wilbur Ross said that there would be a ban on TikTok downloads in the U.S. starting on Sunday and a total ban on the use of TikTok will follow on Nov. 12 if a deal is not reached, but Ross said in an interview access to the app may be possible if certain safeguards are put in place.
Trump also announced his administration will be contributing US$13 billion for what he called the “largest” in emergency relief award, to Puerto Rico to help rebuilt its electrical and educational systems.
