U.S. to pay World Health Organization more than $200 mil.

Amid the ongoing pandemic, the United States,... under the Biden administration is showing more dedication to the World Health Organization.
It has pledged to pay a lump sum of 200 million U.S. dollars to the agency.

Jeong-yoon, what is this payment and what does it imply?
Mokyeon, the U.S. said it intends to pay the WHO over 200-hundred million dollars by the end of the month.
This is being read as a goodwill gesture as they move to recommit to the multilateral organization.
The U.S. had withdrawn from the WHO in July last year under the Trump administration,... although this was immediately reversed on the day of President Biden's inauguration.
Secretary of State Antony Blinken made the announcement on Wednesday at a UN meeting on equitable global vaccine distribution. Take a listen.
"This is a key step forward in fulfilling our financial obligations as a WHO member. And it reflects our renewed commitment to ensuring the WHO has the support it needs to lead the global response to the pandemic, even as we work to reform it for the future."
The top US diplomat went on to emphasize that the COVID-19 response should be handled globally and urged all countries to do their part to address the outbreak as well as major health crises in the coming future.
His comments mark a sharp departure from Trump's position, which had scorned and sought to leave the WHO amid the deadly pandemic.
The U.S. had faced global criticism last year following its failure to hand over a 62-million dollars obligatory payment to the organization.
