Coronavirus vaccine latest news update: The FDA in United States has released a set of guidelines for Covid-19 vaccine makers despite opposition from the White House. AstraZeneca is still awaiting a green signal for the coronavirus vaccine trials in US.

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has released a set of guidelines for coronavirus vaccine makers ahead of the US election even as the Trump administration continues to push for an early vaccine. The move may now push back the efforts to have a Covid-19 vaccine in the US before the polls.

In the new guidelines, FDA has said Covid-19 vaccine makers must follow the volunteers who are being administered the doses for at least two months in order to rule out any major side effects.

The two-month observation period has been a sore point between FDA and the White House that has been pressing for an early Covid-19 vaccine that can be released before the upcoming US election in which Donald Trump is seeking re-election. The Trump administration believes the two-month period will cause “unreasonable delay”.

On the other hand, Donald Trump who himself has been infected with the novel coronavirus, has once again insisted that the Covid-19 vaccines are coming “momentarily”.

Meanwhile, Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla has stoked hopes by saying that he expects data on whether the company’s coronavirus vaccine candidate works to be ready in late October. But a number of variables would still have to align for the company to submit, and the FDA to review and green light, a vaccine application before November 3. Pfizer's competitors Moderna, AstraZeneca and Johnson & Johnson are working on longer research timelines.
