Israel is working overtime to hide its crimes | David Hearst | MEE Opinion
David Hearst, editor-in-chief of Middle East Eye, says that amid a global decline in support, Israel and its allies are scrambling to conceal the evidence of their crimes.
The controversies surrounding the BBC documentary Gaza: How to Survive a Warzone and the Oscar-winning No Other Land are deliberate attempts to quash the voices within them.
Israel’s goal, Hearst argues, is not simply to cancel these documentaries but to erase any means by which Palestinians can express the extraordinary brutality they are enduring at Israeli hands.
Hearst said that the shift in public support for Israel, he says, is unparalleled in the decades-long history of the conflict. It is little surprise, then, that Israel and its supporters are in a state of panic - finding themselves on the wrong side of history.
This period, Hearst adds, will be remembered as Israel’s and the western liberal media’s darkest hour. And when a future generation asks: “Where were you when Gaza and the West Bank were being pounded to dust?” - the answer will be telling.
