NHS safety fears: are less qualified staff replacing doctors?

Channel 4 News understands the Government is set to announce a rapid review into the use of Physician Associates in the NHS.

Known as PAs, they are not medically qualified but are able to examine, diagnose and treat patients under supervision.

Now Channel 4 News can reveal that NHS trusts have been using them to fill gaps in medical rotas - despite warnings from NHS England.

At the same time, the PAs themselves have come under attack from doctors, facing on-line abuse.
