“Venice Of Nigeria” Demolished: Thousands Left Homeless In Lagos Clearance | Firstpost Africa | N18G

Thousands of residents in Lagos have been left homeless after authorities demolished stilt houses in the historic Makoko waterfront community above the Lagos Lagoon. The clearance has destroyed homes, schools, and livelihoods, sparking protests and human rights concerns. Officials say the action is necessary for safety and urban planning, but community leaders allege forced evictions without consultation or resettlement. With demolitions continuing and no compensation announced, families are now struggling to survive along the lagoon edge, amid rising tensions and uncertain futures for thousands of displaced men, women, and children across Nigeria’s largest city.
