(8 Aug 2014) When the World Health Organization on Friday called the spread of Ebola in West Africa an international health emergency, George Salloum, Vice President of relief organization SIM USA, welcomed the response to the crisis. But Salloum went on to say the attention to the disease was "better late than never."
The outbreak in West Africa has already killed more than 900 people and is spreading. Two Americans working with SIM have been sickened and are being treated in an Atlanta hospital.
Salloum is head of the relief group's Ebola response team. He says the group is doing everything it can to protect its people while they carry out their mission. "We are in constant contact with the CDC as well as various state and county health authorities and we are always looking for best practices to apply to every situation that we're faced with medically and health-wise"says Salloum.
The group holds daily conference calls with members of their team in Africa to discuss various strategies and what they will do to continue missionary efforts.
The current Ebola outbreak is the largest and longest ever recorded for the disease, which has a death rate of about 50 percent.
