Why did Israel launch strikes on Iran?

In just one night, Israel has damaged Iran's nuclear facilities, wiped out its air defences and assassinated several of its military leaders.

Iran called the attack "a declaration of war" and vowed to retaliate. Israel has said it's just the beginning and is preparing for conflict.

Just weeks ago, US President Trump said America and Iran were "very close to a deal". So what changed? And why has Israel chosen to attack its long-time adversary now?
